Did you know that there are two important factors you should bear in mind when you buy and wear jewelry? These factors are:
- Face shape
- Skin tone
Starting with face shape;
Oval Shaped Face
Women with an oval shaped face can usually wear all types of earrings and necklaces. However, to get the most dazzling effect, try these:
Earrings: Dangle earrings (not too long), preferably angular shaped. Hoops are a great choice for an oval face. This shape of face can also pull off earrings that are wider in design.
Avoid: Earrings that are overly long because this will add more length to the oval face.
Necklaces: They can be either long or short (if you have a long neck, then chose a shorter necklace.) Choose pieces that are sized similar to your overall build. If you are a plus size lady, you will be able to pull off heavier pieces, versus a petite person who will look better with simple pieces.
Pear/Triangular Shaped Face
Think, long and layered. The length of the jewelry you wear will elongate your face. These are the things that you need to remember when selecting jewelry. This helps to draw attention away from a very strong jaw line.
Earrings: Try elongated shapes or angular shapes. The narrowest part of the earring must be next to the jaw line. Heart shapes or teardrops that are wider at the top and end at the level of the cheekbones or above are good choices as they add width. Small stud or button styles that have long narrow dangling components help create more length.
Necklaces: Look for necklaces that elongate your face, typically necklaces that extend below the neckline (28″ to 32″). Adding pendants and mixing a variety of chains and necklace lengths. The extra adornments will help bring more balance to a strong-jawed face. Short necklaces with gentle curves soften a strong jaw line. Selecting something with a gentle curve under the jaw can lengthen the look of the face. Large focal components on necklaces that form a “V” can draw attention below the neck and give the appearance of a longer face. Pendants or necklaces with focal components such as swirls can counter the strong angular characteristics of the jaw, softening the look of the face.
Heart/ Inverted Triangle Shaped Face
Heart/Inverted triangle shaped faces are the opposite pears, with a strong forehead and a narrow, defined chin. You want to de-emphasize the forehead and soften the sharpness of your chin.
Earrings: Dangle or drop earrings help to lengthen the face. Cluster or other smallish earrings look stylish without adding extra length or slimming a face that’s already narrow. Try to have the widest part of the earring closest to the chin. Your jewelry needs to add width at the level of the chin, so use horizontal lines of hoops, teardrops, curves, triangles and other dangling space-filling designs.
Avoid: Small stud or button type earrings and styles that are very narrow and long.
Necklaces: Chokers help contrast and soften the sharp angle of the chin. Choker or short length necklaces work best for this facial type, because they create more bulk near the narrow area of the face enhancing its balance. Try wearing large gems/beads. The extra bulk of the gems/beads help fill out the face. Stacked necklaces, or multiple strand styles, help to balance out the face. You could also try a bold pendant that hangs closely under the chin.
Square Shaped Face
Defined, angular cheeks and a strong jaw line and forehead are typical of square face shapes.
Earrings: Try elongated shapes such as ovals, or angular shapes such as rectangles. Square shaped faces look particularly good in teardrop earrings. Small earrings are a good choice. Large oval hoops, long drop earrings and narrow chandelier earrings are also great options for you.
Avoid: Wide chandelier styles are also not a good choice.
Necklaces: Look for necklaces that elongate your face, typically necklaces that extend below the neckline (28″ to 32″). Adding pendants and mixing a variety of chains and necklace lengths. Larger focal components on necklaces form a “U”, drawing the attention below the neck line. Look for a necklace with a pendant or other focal component or components with curves or swirls to balance the strong angular features of the jaw.
Avoid: Choker type necklaces that are overly chunky as these may shorten the look of the neck and make it appear wider.
Rectangular and Oblong Shaped Face
This shape is a square, but with a more angular, smaller chin and narrower forehead.
Earrings: Choose short or round earrings to contrast the longer face shape. Large hoop earrings are the best choice. Larger, bold style earrings are great for you. Earrings with lots of movement and drama are perfect. Select shapes like large circles, curves, crescents or other wide designs that will complement your face shape.
Necklaces: Chokers are great especially if you have a long neck. Shorter necklace lengths are typically a good choice. Long necklaces work too. Just make sure that they are bulky, and wrapped three times to give it depth. Short necklaces will help reduce the long look of these two face shapes and help to balance the face. The shorter necklaces will break up the vertical line that occurs with oblong and rectangular faces. Large beads at the base of the neck help shorten the look of the face. Necklaces with heavy or bold focal components are another good option for you if your face is oblong or rectangular in shape.
Round Shaped Face
Round faces are rarely true circles, but their fuller cheeks and strong forehead create the illusion of roundness. You need to try an make the face appear more oval .
Earrings: Try elongated shapes such as ovals, or angular shapes such as rectangles. Long, vertical styles of earrings like dangles, drops or narrow chandelier types. A round face can be flattered with vertically angular designs. Styles that create a strong vertical line will look wonderful on a round face.
Necklaces: Look for necklaces that elongate your face, typically necklaces that extend below the neckline (28″ to 32″). Chunky collar length necklaces help. Wear longer necklaces that balance the look of the face. Larger focal components which create a “V” and draw the eye below the neckline create a visually longer line.
Avoid: Shorter necklaces like chokers will only shorten the appearance a round face and could make the neck appear wider than it is.
Diamond Shaped Face
Earrings: dangle or drop earrings help to lengthen the face. Dangling earrings with teardrops, pear shapes or triangle shaped drops work well.
Necklaces: chokers help contrast and soften the sharp angle of the chin. Chokers emphasize a long neck while a long necklace lengthens the wearer’s torso. Low hanging necklaces with drops or pendants are good too.

Jewelry Preservation Tips
These days a lot of girls prefer to wear fashion jewelry. You get these in beautiful and varied designs and at cheaper rates as opposed to gold, silver and other precious metals. The only problem is that, they will only last long if they are taken good care of.
Try these techniques to preserve your jewelry:
1) Give it a thin coating of clear nail polish. This will prevent corrosion of the metal and give the metal an extra shine.
2) Use separate containers or ziplock bags for storage.
3) Every once in a while, lightly dust with talcum powder. This will get rid of any excess moisture.
4) Use gentle materials for cleaning . You could even use the cloth that they provide for cleaning spectacles.
5) Avoid using cleaning agents that contain these ingredients:
6) Make sure to store them in a dry and cool place. They may collect dust easily so always dust them.
